How to Style a Rug

This week we are back with some more styling tips, and this time we are styling rugs! Rugs are essential to almost every space because they add warmth and coziness to a space. We know that styling rugs can be a little overwhelming. You have to consider the room size, the furniture pieces it will be styled with, and make sure the colors and pattern match the overall look of the room. Luckily, we’ve been doing this for quite some time and have some really great tips and guidelines for styling rugs!

One of our biggest tips for styling a rug is that you make sure your rug is large enough for your space. Don’t be afraid of purchasing a big rug, it needs to be quite large if it’s really going to fill your space! If you’re unsure how large it needs to be, a general rule of thumb is to make sure the front two legs of all of the main furniture pieces are placed on the rug. If you take a look at the living room we designed above, you can see both couches and the chairs front legs are on the rug.

Rug styled in bedroom

We just love adding rugs in the bedroom. It is the piece that brings the entire room together and creates the cozy feel that you want your bedroom to have. Styling a rug in a bedroom looks different than styling one in the living room, because there is only one main furniture piece at play here-the bed. You’ll want to leave some space between the rug and the night stands as pictured above, our rule of thumb is at least 6 inches. Then, make sure the rug extends past the end of the bed at least one foot.

Be intentional about the pattern scale of the rug you are choosing. Rugs are a great way to add pattern and breathe life into a room, but you don’t want to overwhelm the space. For example, if you have a smaller space, you’ll want to choose a rug with a smaller pattern scale.

Entryway rug

Lastly, placing a rug in your entry way is the perfect way to give a very welcoming and inviting vibe! it can be a little scary to place rugs in high traffic areas of your home. If you’re worried about ruining the rug, you can purchase an indoor/outdoor rug that will be able to withstand more or a vintage one that is great at disguising stains and already has a worn look to it.

When designing your home, making it beautiful is a priority but comfort should be as well. Using rugs to style your space is the best way to achieve both! We hope you found these tips helpful!

What size do you suggest for two full beds in the same room? Does the rug need to be big enough for both to fit on? Or it can just go between?
